Ourika Valley – A Natural Treasure in the Heart of the High Atlas vallee ourika au coeur de haut atlas
vallee ourika au coeur de haut atlas
Nestled at the foot of the first slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the Ourika Valley stretches for nearly 68 km, from the outskirts of Marrakech, at the edge of the Haouz plain, to the charming Berber village of Setti Fatma, perched 1,500 meters above sea level.
Easily accessible from the Medina or Guéliz, just 30 km south of the Red City, this valley is one of the most visited in the High Atlas. Renowned for its spectacular landscapes and lush vegetation, it enchants visitors with its picturesque Berber villages scattered along the riverbanks, offering an authentic immersion into local culture.
The Ourika is a river that originates in the Moroccan High Atlas and partially flows through the valley that bears its name. It is a tributary of the great Oued Tensift. In Arabic, the word oued means “river,” and the Ourika winds its way from the first slopes of the Atlas, at 1,500 meters altitude, all the way to the gates of Marrakech, irrigating the villages along its course.
While the valley captivates with its beauty, it also serves as a reminder of nature’s power: during storms, the riverbed can quickly overflow. The flood of 1995 remains a tragic memory, claiming thousands of lives.
Blessed with a pleasant climate, the valley is lined with fertile fields, olive groves, almond and cherry orchards. The winding, hilly road that crosses it offers, in spring—after the rainy season—an enchanting spectacle: bright red earth, terracotta hues, and abundant greenery. The air gradually cools as you climb in altitude, with summer temperatures up to 15°C lower than in Marrakech. The ever-changing panoramas are simply breathtaking.
The name Ourika comes from Urika, linked to the Masmouda tribe (Imasmoude in Amazigh), one of the largest Berber groups and founders of the Almohad dynasty. Even today, the valley is predominantly inhabited by Berber-speaking populations of the Chleuh dialect, preserving a vibrant cultural heritage.
